Bearcats Softball Honored At 2018 America East Softball Awards

Posted: Updated:

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior outfielder Jessica Rutherford, sophomore first baseman Kassidy Seary and sophomore designated player Rozlyn Price earned first-team all-conference honors as the America East announced its 2018 all-conference softball teams on Tuesday night. In addition, senior third baseman Kate Richard was named to the second team while freshman shortstop Mikayla Alvarez and freshman pitcher Chelsea Howard were both chosen to the All-Rookie Team.

With three first-team selections, Binghamton tied UMass Lowell for first among the conference schools. The Bearcats were also one of only three schools to post multiple All-Rookie selections (with UMass Lowell and Albany being the others).

Rutherford, who ranks No. 25 in the nation with a .426 batting average, earned first-team honors for the third year in a row. She is just the fourth Binghamton player to earn first-team honors three times during their career, joining Sydney Harbaugh (2013-16), Jessica Chellis (2002-04) and Lisa Cadogan (2013-15). In her freshman year (2015), Rutherford was a second-team selection as well as the America East Rookie of the Year.

At the America East level, Rutherford ranks first in runs (30), hits (58) and on-base percentage (.451). She is also second in slugging percentage (.559).

In Binghamton program history, Rutherford ranks first all-time with 230 career hits and is second with 144 runs. She is also third with 137 RBI, fourth with 38 doubles and is tied for ninth with 16 home runs.

Seary makes her first all-conference appearance. In her first season as a starter, she ranks third on the team in batting (.298), is first with 11 doubles and is second with 29 RBI. Seary currently has a career-high, seven-game hitting streak.

Price, who was named to the All-Rookie Team last year, also earns her first all-conference selection. Although she did not take over the designated player spot until midway through the season, she is tied for the team lead with seven home runs. Price is also a starting pitcher for the second year in a row.

Like Rutherford, Richard is also a four-time all-conference selection. She was a second-team pick her freshman year before landing on the first team the past two years. Richard is tied with Price for the team lead with seven home runs and ranks first with 32 RBI. She is also second in batting (.310).

In the Binghamton record books, Richard is tied for second all-time with 34 home runs and is also second with 142 RBI. In addition, she is seventh all-time with 168 career hits.

Alvarez started 38 games at the shortstop position. She has 12 extra-base hits (eight doubles and four home runs) and is tied for the team lead with 10 steals.

Howard is 3-2 on the mound and was named the America East Co-Rookie of the Week on May 2. She also leads the Bearcats with a pair of saves.

Binghamton (16-23) is the host school in the upcoming America East Tournament for the third consecutive year and the fourth time since 2013. The fifth-seeded Bearcats open play against fourth-seeded Maine with an 11 a.m. first-round game.
