City of Binghamton Demolishes "Notorious" North Side Eyesore
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -
The City of Binghamton started demolition of the former gas station and car wash at 419 Chenango St., on Monday morning.
This site on the North side of Binghamton has presented several bureaucratic and environmental hurdles that previously prevented action from being taken place on the property.
In 2011, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) performed environmental cleanup of the property, including the removal of six underground storage tanks, two petroleum pump stations, and associated plumbing. The DEC spent around $76,000 in remedial costs, which is a lien against the property.
Mayor Rich David negotiated an agreement with the DEC and Broome County where the DEC would release the lien and waive its claim to past costs. This allowed Broome County to foreclose on the property and transfer it to the City of Binghamton for one dollar.
