Broome County Overdose Deaths Down

Posted: Updated:

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell released overdose drug death
data for January 1st through March 31st, 2018: eight deaths have been confirmed in Broome County.

The first quarter of 2016 saw 23 overdose deaths, and the first quarter of 2017 saw 22 overdose deaths.
As part of the District Attorney’s Office on-going investigation into overdose deaths, Cornwell and Overdose
Death Investigator Jeffrey Wagner reviewed death certificates, police reports, coroner’s reports, and toxicology
reports; interviewed addicts and family members of the deceased; and coordinated with police agencies who
responded to overdose deaths.

Of the eight deaths:
• 5 male; 3 female;
• Average age: 39;
• 5 in the City of Binghamton; 3 in the Town of Union; and
• 6 attributed to opioids and/or heroin; 2 attributed to other drugs.

“Losing even one life, to a drug overdose, is too many,” said District Attorney Steve Cornwell. “But as Broome
County continues to work together, on treatment and life-saving initiatives, fewer lives are being lost to drugs
in our community.”
