BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

Drivers can expect to see more construction on the roads in the coming weeks.

As the weather gets warmer, the New York State Department of Transportation will begin more work on the roads, including Phase 2 of the Prospect Mountain Construction Project. With construction on I-81 South and State Rt. 17 East completed, Phase 2 will now begin work on the latter sides of the highway.

NYSDOT presented the information to law enforcement during a meeting on Thursday. The Department will work closely with city, county, and state police to address public safety during construction.

There will be heightened traffic enforcement by all Binghamton Police, Sheriffs Office, and the State police. Law enforcement says the biggest challenges they face include drivers not slowing down and not being aware.

"It's not about you and your own objective, if you're late to work, whatever the case may be, there's construction workers there, it's 45 for a reason. Slow down, there will be heavier traffic enforcement by law enforcement, Binghamton police, sheriffs office, and state police. That's a very nasty ticket to get at construction zones," said Lt. Ben Harding, Patrol Division of Broome County Sheriffs Office.

Lt. Harding wants to remind drivers that construction zones are still in effect whether or not work is being done. He says construction zones in the area will be similar to the construction done on 1-81 South and State Rt. 17 last December. With that project completed, all traffic will now be running on those highways while construction is being done I-81 North and State Rt. 17 West.

"One of the main goals of the Prospect Mountain Phase 2 Project is to address the weaving and merging issues that traffic has association with the Exit 4 Binghamton interchange," said Tom Phillips, Engineer in Charge, NYSDOT

Other construction projects the NYSDOT plans for 2018 include:

  • Reconstruction of Front St between Prospect St and Bevier St
  • Reconstruction of State Rt 7 North and South between Bevier St and Frederick St
  • Continued construction on the new State Rt 17 eastbound flyover bridge over the Chenango River
