Binghamton High School Planning "March For Our Lives" on March 14

Posted: Updated:

Binghamton High School is planning a "March For Our Lives" event on March 14th, the date of a national movement to prevent school violence.

According to an email sent to parents from Principal Kevin Richman, the high school's student government planned numerous activities for students to participate in the day of advocacy.

Following a speech about the importance of the event, students will walk out of their classrooms and into the hallways at 10:00 a.m., joining arm in arm in a human chain throughout the building. A bell will ring and the names of each victim of the Parkland shooting will be read on the minute for 17 minutes.

In addition, seventeen chairs will be displayed in the student commons, with photos of each victim and flowers on each chair. A banner reading “Binghamton High School Stands with Marjory Stoneman Douglas” will be placed above the chairs with the victims' names.

Seventeen days of action will follow the March 14th event, commemorating the victims through positive action at the high school.

All of the above activities were created by students and will be led by students on March 14th. We are looking forward to allowing our students’ voices to be heard and a day of action to occur. - Principal Kevin Richman

Richman asked all students to wear Binghamton Patriots clothing or colors for the event.

Nearly 600 worldwide events have been scheduled to take place on March 14th.
