Christopher Columbus Monument Vandalized in Downtown Binghamton

Posted: Updated:
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

The Christopher Columbus monument located outside the Broome County Supreme Court building has been vandalized.

The word "murderer" was written in red and painted over the Christopher Columbus statue. The vandalism was reported to the Binghamton Police around 12:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Broome County custodial workers were removing the spray paint from the monument using a power washing machine.

The destruction of county property is disrespectful. Regardless of your beliefs, this type of action is unacceptable. Today's illegal behavior will not be tolerated. Vandalism has no place here and defacing public property is no way to make a statement. I want to thank our Department of Public Works employees for their work today to restore the statue.
