Strawn joins likes of Namath, Messier after fulfilling promise

TROY, NY -

While a NYSPHSAA Class B Girls Basketball Title may not compare to a Super Bowl or a Stanley Cup, Seton Catholic Central Point Guard Hanna Strawn can draw comparisons to champions of the former.  After winning the Section IV Title back on March 3, Strawn promised Fox 40 that the Saints would win a State Title.  Fast forward 15 days and the Saints are State Champions.

In 1969 Joe Namath guaranteed that the Jets would win Super Bowl III.  Lo and behold, the AFL Jets stunned the NFL Colts to win the Super Bowl.  In 1994 Mark Messier predicted the New York Rangers would beat the New Jersey Devils in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals down 3-2 in the series.  The Rangers went on to win the Stanley Cup.  Now, in 2017, Strawn makes good on her promise of winning states.

It's a coach's worst nightmare, a player sticking their neck out to predict, guarantee, or promise a win of any kind, much less a championship.  Lose and you're the goat.  Win, and you're the G.O.A.T.  Okay, maybe that's a stretch, but you get the idea.  While Strawn's promise was made to Fox 40 just over two weeks ago, the promise was made to and amongst her teammates last season after falling in the State Regionals.  The public promise this time around though, was a bit of a headache for her head coach.

"This group told me at the beginning.  [Last year's Regional loss], don't worry, we'll get back here again and they did," said Head Coach Colleen Jayne.  "They answered.  They told me 'we're going to win coach.'  Hanna's promise, it scared me a little bit.  I'm like 'Hanna?' and she's like 'no coach, I promised,' and I'm like 'ok...' and here we are."

With their primary objective complete, the road is not over for the Saints.  They now head to Glens Falls for the Federation Tournament.  The Saints will play Holcombe L. Rucker, Champion of the PSAL.  The winner will play CHSAA Champion Aquinas, of Queens.
