Report: Alzheimer's Brings High Cost For Caregivers

By Kerry Longobucco.
A new report released Wednesday highlights the startling cost of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease.

Caring for someone with Alzheimer's can be emotionally demanding and time consuming -- but a new report from the Alzheimer's Association shows it can also be expensive.

According to the report, caregivers are, on average, spending $5000 a year out of their own pocket to cover costs -- and are often, taking pay cuts as well.

"Caregivers are oftentimes, faced with having to take lesser demanding jobs, or perhaps go from full time to part time," Cathy James, of the Alzheimer's Assocation, said. "And so this report showed that on average, people's personal income went down $15,000 year over year."

The Alzheimer's Assocation wants caregivers to know, they have somewhere to turn. You can reach a dementia care expert 24 hours a day, by calling 1-800-272-3900.
