Local Christians Reflect on Good Friday

It was a solemn day for Christians across the Southern Tier as they honored the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

On Friday afternoon, a prayer vigil was held at the United Methodist Church in Newark Valley. Members of the congregation commemorated Jesus' death on the cross before they celebrate his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

"People just come in, sit down, and spend some time in reflection, thinking about the sacrifice of Christ,” said Pastor Tom Middleton.

“And they pray for forgiveness of their sins and for hope for the world, and for their friends, and for others."

The church will host a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.

A prayer walk will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon, with different stations representing the last week of Jesus’ life.

There will also be a Son Rise service on Sunday at 6:45 a.m. at the Newark Valley Trout Ponds.

It will be followed by an Easter service at the church at 9:30.

The church will also host a community Easter dinner at 2 p.m.
