Kurdish New Year Celebrated in Binghamton

The local Kurdish gathered in Binghamton Monday morning, to celebrate Newroz.

Mayor Rich David raised a Kurdish flag outside city hall, in honor of the Kurdish New Year. The holiday is always celebrated on March 21st, the first full day of spring.

Attendees said they appreciate local leader recognizing a day that's so important to their close-knit community.

"Every year, we are together, celebrating together," Jumaa Barany, a Kurdish community organizer, said. "We have a good religion, and a good community relation with Mr. Mayor."

This is the city of Binghamton's first time holding a flag raising in honor of Newroz.
