Binghamton University Police Give Annual Campus Safety Report

As Binghamton University enrollment numbers increased to almost 17,000 students in 2015, University Police say the number of crime incident reports actually went down.

Those statistics were discussed Tuesday morning in an Annual Campus Safety Report.

According to the report, the number of overall service responses, which includes incidents like motor vehicle accidents, increased by more than 200. However, police say reports show 37 less crime incidents with 1,363 in 2014 and 1,326 in 2015.

Chief of University Police, Timothy Faughnan, said part of that statistic may be from new diversion programs working with student affairs for minor offenses.

Officials say a Police Partnership Initiative between the City of Binghamton and Binghamton PD, providing a single contact for students and city residents, has increased responsiveness and problem resolution.
