'Pride and Joy Families' Weekend Conference for LGBTQ Families Kicked off Friday Night

By Emily Girsch.
The 2016 Pride and Joy families weekend conference kicked off this afternoon.

A pre-conference training session was held at Binghamton University for over a hundred social workers, psychologists and educators.

The annual weekend-long conference is put on by the Lesbian and Gay Family Building Project.

The organization received a grant from the New York State Health Department in 2000 to provide resources for families in LGBTQ communities.

"Today's training was all about hearing from trans individuals, hearing about their own experiences, and learning how to create more inclusive and welcoming and affirming doctors' offices, mental health practices, etc., said Claudia Stallman, executive director for the Lesbian and Gay Family Building Project.

More than 170 adults and children are registered to attend.

The conference begins Friday night and will run through Sunday at the Holiday Inn in Binghamton.
