Irish Pride Soars in Johnson City

By Kerry Longobucco.
Members of the local Irish community started their St. Patrick's day with a flag raising in Johnson City.

Village Mayor Greg Deemie (R) and the Broome County Ancient Order of Hibernians gathered at People's Park, near the corner of Harry L. Drive and Reynolds Road.

Susan Connors, who served as this year's grand marshal, says today is about appreciating Irish Americans for their contribution to our country.

"They worked on the subways, they built the canals. They did a lot of work, and they weren't always appreciated for it," Connors said. "But they had to come to america to escape all the wrongful doings in ireland."

Attendees marked the holiday by singing celtic songs, and hoisting the Irish flag.
