By Fox 40 Staff. A statewide burn ban is in effect until May 14th.
The ban which began yesterday is due to the fact that this time of year creates a higher risk for fires.
The ban makes it illegal to use a burn barrel or open pits as a means for incinerating trash.
"The purpose is to prevent outdoor wildfires from developing as a result of these types of fires extending which they typically do in the springtime when vegetation is very dry and it tends to be windy," said Raymond Serowik with Broome County Emergency Services.
Agricultural burns are allowed and there are certain circumstances when controlled burns, such as a bonfire, are allowed with a written permit from the State Department of Environmental Conservation.
