Schumer calls for $100 Million to Support Lead Testing in Schools

By Jason Weinstein.
Senator Charles Schumer is introducing a bill that would create a $100 million grant program to help school districts test for lead in water.

This comes on the heels of high lead levels being found in districts in the Ithaca area, as well as in Binghamton. Schumer says this grant program was originally part of a 1988 bill called the Lead Contamination Control Act, but the legislative text outlining the program was struck down by the courts due to a drafting error.

Schumer says at the federal level there is no requirement to test for lead levels in schools.
