Cornell University President Elizabeth Garrett has died at the age of 52 from colon cancer.

The university says Garrett died Sunday night. Garrett was Cornell's first female president and is the first to die in office.

She was inaugurated last September as Cornell's 13th president. Garrett first shared her cancer diagnosis February 8th. She underwent surgery February 19th. On February 22 the school announced that Garrett had been released from intensive care and would continue treatment.

Cornell held a university-wide moment of silence Monday afternoon.
