Middle School Students Battle It Out With Chemistry

By Brianna Case.
Middle school students from Susquehanna Valley and Vestal, tested their chemistry knowledge today as they competed in the You Be the Chemist challenge at Binghamton University.

The chemical educational foundation created this challenge two years ago to motivate 5th through 8th grade students to sharpen their knowledge of chemistry concepts and real world applications.

It also is a chance for students to win college scholarships.

"The purpose of the challenge is to increase interest in science in general and chemistry in particular. The students that we tend to have attracted to the challenge are students who not might be challenged in their course work," said Daniel Brennan, Associate Professor of Chemistry at SUNY Broome.

The winners of today's challenge will be invited to the BASF research laboratories in Tarrytown, NY in April.
