Man Arrested for Stolen License Plates

A Binghamton man has been arrested for stolen license plates.

During a Broome County Sheriff’s Office investigation into stolen license plates after they were located by a Binghamton Police Officer on a parked car, a Broome County Sheriff’s Sergeant observed the suspects’ vehicle leaving the parking lot and drive down Clinton St in the City of Binghamton.The vehicle was stopped a short time later.

Operator, Jamell Jones, 29, was taken into custody. According to police, while being arrested, Jones resisted and struggled with deputies. During the struggle, he also attempted to kick out a patrol vehicle window and threatened to kick officers. Jones was restrained before any damage could be done to the vehicle.

The license plates that were on the vehicle had been reported stolen to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office. The plates were previously reported stolen from a vehicle parked in a business in Endwell two weeks ago.

A police investigation revealed that the vehicle that had the stolen plates on it was stolen sometime in late 2015 while the owner was incarcerated in the Broome County Correctional Facility. Jones was arraigned in Town of Union court and remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility without bail, pending further court action. Binghamton City Police also assisted in the investigation.

Jones is being charged with Felony Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Misdemeanor Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Misdemeanor Obstructing Governmental Administration, Misdemeanor Resisting Arrest, and various other violations.

No one was injured during the incident.
