Schumer Wants Millions for Lead Paint Removal

By Jason Weinstein.
Senator Charles Schumer wants more money to eliminate lead paint from homes throughout Upstate New York.

According to the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control, 138 children in the Southern Tier tested positive for lead poisoning. 34 for of them were in Broome County. Lead paint is more prevalent in older homes.

According to Schumer 44% of homes in Broome County were built before 1950. Schumer is calling for legislation giving $250 million to a federal grant program that addresses lead control. That bill would also provide tax credits to help homeowners remove lead. Lead paint was banned in 1978.
