Local Teen To Audition For NBC's 'The Voice'

A Broome County teen will head to Philadelphia this weekend, to audition for NBC's 'The Voice.'

Diamond Ming is just 15 years old -- but she sings with a depth and maturity that's well beyond her years. The teen says music is her first love.

"I've been singing since I can remember. My mom sings," Ming said. "I just remember going to church, and really just loving the music."

The high school freshman has graced the NorthPointe church with her talent -- and is known for her show-stopping solos at her Chenango Valley chorus performances.

"She's really got a certain kind of jazzy kind of style, that is something that's really hard to teach. It's something that she just has," Margaret Buhl, a Chenango Valley vocal teacher, said.

But with a name like Diamond, it's no wonder that this rising star has dreams too big for her small town. She hopes competing on 'The Voice' will be her ticket.

"I'm really excited to do this," Ming said. "I thought it would be really cool to see how far I could go with this."

She's got the support of Chenango Valley behind her. Her vocal teacher says she's proud of Ming's ambition -- but not surprised in the least.

"Diamond is always ready to take on something new, or a solo," Buhl said.

At age 15, Ming just barely cleared the show's minimum age requirement. The prospect of putting her life as a typical teen on hold makes her nervous -- but it won't hold her back.

"I'd definitely miss just being able to wake up in the morning and go to school because I actually do like going to school," Ming said. "But i just figure, if the opportunity is in front of you, why not take it?"

Ming's first audition will be off-camera. If she makes it through, she'll get to bring her talent before the voice's star-studded panel of judges. The teen says she's most looking forward to meeting Pharrell Williams.
