Binghamton Murder Suspect Arrested in Florida

By FOX 40 Staff.
The man Binghamton Police have been searching for in connection with a weekend shooting in Binghamton has been arrested in Florida.

Jonathon Garcia, 19, of Binghamton is charged with second-degree murder for the early Sunday morning shooting that led to the death of 28-year-old Jamaal Moses of Binghamton.

Binghamton Police were able to provide information to the U.S. Marshals Service and the Miami-Dade Police Department in Florida, which led to the locating and detaining of Garcia Monday night. He was pulled over near an exit outside Miami. Garcia has family connections in Miami, according to police. Authorities say there was no struggle in the arrest.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was also alerted. This was in case the suspect tried to board an airplane to Cuba where he is said to have ties.

Police believe Sunday's fatal shooting was part of a drug deal gone bad, not a random act. The shooting took place around one a.m. near the intersection of Lake Ave and Merrill St. Moses was shot several times and died from his injuries at Wilson Hospital.

Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said it was teamwork of law enforcement agencies; including US Marshals, NYS Police, the Broome County District Attorney’s Office, and the Miami-Dade Homicide Bureau, that helped locate the suspect in a timely manner.

"I can’t stress the teamwork and the cooperation with the agencies over 1,000 miles away,” said Zikuski, “They dropped everything when we had valuable information provided to them of where Garcia was heading and took him into custody for us."

Garcia is currently being held in the Dade County Correctional Facility awaiting extradition to New York State. Zikuski expects him to return to Binghamton within the next few days.

Police are still searching for the murder weapon.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Binghamton Detective's Bureau at (607)-772-7080.
