Buzzer Beater Burns Bearcats

VESTAL, N.Y. – Katelyn Skinner scored at the buzzer, leading Hartford (10-14, 6-5 AE) to a 41-39 win over Binghamton (10-15, 5-7 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Thursday night at the Events Center. The game was the first of four straight home contests for the Bearcats.

Senior guard Kim Albrecht scored a game-high 12 points for Binghamton while freshman guard Rebecca Carmody finished with six points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior forward Kristin Ross, meanwhile, added eight points and eight rebounds.

Ross scored six of her points in the opening 4:11 of play as the Bearcats went up 9-2. The Hawks bounced back, however, to take a 15-12 lead at the end of the period and a 28-19 advantage at the end of the first half.

In the third period, Albrecht drained a pair of three pointers as Binghamton outscored Hartford 16-6 to go up 35-34. The Bearcat defense held the Hawks to only a pair of field goals during that 10-minute stretch.

Both teams, however, struggled from the field in the final period of play. Sophomore forward Alyssa James sank a pair of free throws with 5:55 remaining, putting the Bearcats ahead 39-37. After nearly three scoreless minutes, Jalay Knowles tied the score at 39-39.

Hartford had the final possession of regulation and Knowles missed a jumper with timing running out. Skinner, however, grabbed the rebound and fired off her game-winning shot in time.

Darby Lee led Hartford with 10 points.

James finished with a game-high four blocks and four steals to go along with five points and five rebounds.

Binghamton continues its home stretch with a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday against Vermont.
