Johnson City Students Get Educated on Addiction

Students in the Johnson City School District got educated on addiction.

Guest speakers talked to middle and high school students about the dangers of substance abuse. Alcohol and marijuana were discussed -- but the program mainly focused on opioid addiction.

Speakers say when it comes to young, impressionable teens -- early intervention is key.

"You can't start too young. Bottom line is, most of the people we see in treatment as adults, started their use of substances in their teen years," Alan Wilmarth, director of behavior health at UHS Hospital, said. "Some as young as 11 or 12. It's not that people this age are not using -- some of them already are."

The panel of speakers included a police officer, drug treatment professionals and a former addict.
