Some Youth Leaders Are Recognized in Binghamton

Recipients of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, or RYLA, from the Binghamton Rotary Club shared their experiences with the club on Tuesday.

The RYLA program, through Rotary International, encourages leadership in young people by recognizing students for leadership and service positions. It sends them to a camp where they learn valuable skills.

"My favorite leadership technique that I learned, it was called restorative justice. Instead of giving someone who breaks a rule a punishment, you give them something positive to do that relates to what they did, so they can channel that negative energy and I think that's great," says Elena Tiderencel, RYLA participant.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Program originated in Australia in 1954 as a way to bring young people together for service and community events.
