Almost Annual Crappie Derby Cancelled

By FOX 40 Staff.
The Whitney Point Sportsmens Association and Broome County Parks Department announced Monday the cancellation of the 2016 Almost-Annual NYS Crappie Derby.

According to officials the latest ice thickness readings from Whitney Point Lake last Friday showed only 7 ½ inches of ice on the West (channel) side of the lake. The ‘pond’ area had 9 inches but bringing all areas to a safe level would have been very unlikely.

Derby Coordinator Dave Hughes had this to say on the cancellation:

"This decision was based on input from our friends at the National Weather Service and club historical archives on ice growth. Assuring the safety of our participants is always number one and this year we faced some unusual challenges. We were advised that this coming week we would expect significant warming and more than a little rain. In order to get an OK to proceed on February 8 for a February 13th event, we would have required significant ice growth during a period of highly likely ice loss. The derby committee was unanimous in its decision to cancel. Follow-up contact with the County Parks Director confirmed their support in this decision. Strong El Nino seasons and ice growth don’t work well together."
