Annual Gymnastics Competition Kicks off at Veterans Memorial Arena This Weekend

By Emily Girsch.
The Veterans Memorial Arena was filled with high beams, leaps and somersaults Friday evening.

The annual "I Love New York Cup Gymnastics Invitational" is officially underway.

"The 'I Love New York Cup' is a USA-sanctioned competition so it's the same kind of competition that you'd see in the gymnastics events during the Olympics," said Master of Ceremonies Anthony Bezouka.

A thousand gymnasts from ages 8-18 will be competing, from USAG levels 2 through 10.

The gymnasts represent teams from all over the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, and even some from Canada this year.

11-year-old competitor Bella Bezouka says this is her third year competing.

"My goals are to get better at every single event and to get high scores," said Bella Bezouka.

The goal of the competition is to recognize the commitment and accomplishments of each gymnast competing.

"It's a great opportunity to bring the family out and support the community, support local businesses and see what these girls and these athletes are training hard to do each week," said Anthony Bezouka.

The competition is open to the public.
