Owego Mayor To Be Challenged By Village Trustee in Upcoming Election

Village of Owego Mayor Kevin Millar (D) is being challenged for his position -- by a sitting village trustee.

Republican Steve May has served the village board since 2014. On Monday, he announced his candidacy for mayor.

May is the owner and operator of Owego & Harford Railway, plus ten more local businesses. In a press release, he says he wants to use that business background to improve financial and public accountability as mayor.

But Millar, who has been mayor since 2012, says he questions how May will budget time for his mayoral duties, if elected.

"I know Steve May, I like him personally," Millar said. "I think he's a very busy businessman, and I'm not sure how he could devote the time to be mayor."

Millar said he's proud of how he's helped rebuild Owego in the years proceeding the flood of 2011. He says he's also focused on improving public safety, adding several new police officers to the Owego Police Department over the past few years.

May was unavailable for an interview Monday. The election will take place in March.
