Beating The Mental Illness Blues

By Fox 40 News.
Mental Illness can carry a stigma with it, but one organization trying to break that stigma, had the chance to spread their message through an event called Beat the Blues.

The event was a vendor and craft fair hosted at Flashbacks on State Street Saturday.

Over 20 vendors were spread through out the venue offering participants a wide variety of shopping choices.

Some proceeds from the purchases benefited the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier, a non-profit organization that provides services to youth and adults with mental illness.

Representatives from the agency were on site spreading awareness of some of the challenges mentally ill people face.

"Everyone has things that happen to them in life, maybe personally, or its affected a family member or a close friend even, so for us, we're all small business owners, maybe some of us part time, some of us full time, but we always want to make sure that we're doing something outside of ourselves," says Dorie Spencer, co-founder of Defining Moments.

The Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier is the oldest operating mental health affiliate in New York State.
