Owego Firefighter Remembered at Candlelight Vigil

By Emily Girsch.
"American Pie" by Don McLean was Matthew Porcari's favorite song.

Family and friends came out to celebrate the fallen firefighter at an annual vigil held in Owego

"He fought hard for our community," said friend Ian Gallagher.

"He did everything he could. You want to talk about a standup guy? He's the definition."

He'd do anything for anybody," said another friend, Thomas Donovan.

"He'd help anybody out. There wasn't anybody better."

Matthew came from a long line of firefighters.

His father, grandfather, and uncle all volunteered their time to save and protect the lives of others, even at the risk of their own.

Matthew was killed in a house fire in Newark Valley when a floor collapsed, three years ago today.

"He was a loving guy and he cared deeply about his family and friends and his job," said Matthew's daughter, Tierney Walter.

Matthew is buried next to his father, John at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Owego.

His family hopes that by having a vigil every year, he won't be forgotten.
