Newark Valley Man Indicted for Criminally Negligent Homicide

A Broome County Grand Jury handed up an indictment of Raymond K. Ellis, Sr., accused of Criminally Negligent Homicide associated with the overdose death of Maryanne Whitman.

Raymond E. Ellis, Sr. is charged with Criminally Negligent Homicide, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, and Tampering with Physical Evidence.

Assistant District Attorney Mark Loughran presented the case to a Grand Jury Friday afternoon.

“Far too many drug overdose deaths have plagued our community,” said District Attorney Steve Cornwell. “Those responsible for peddling drugs and enabling users will be charged and prosecuted.”

Ellis was arrested January 8th for selling drugs to a woman who was found unresponsive at the Skylark Motel last month.

An autopsy conducted on the 44 year old woman who died at the motel showed that she died of a drug overdose.

Investigation into this case led Vestal Police to Raymond Ellis Sr., 65 who was arrested for his role in providing drugs to the victim.
