Akshar Criticizes Cuomo For Leaving Heroin Out of State of The State

By Kerry Longobucco.
Local politicians are reacting to Governor Andrew Cuomo's State of the State address and budget proposal -- and one Republican isn't impressed.

It was the first 'State of the State' for newly elected Senator Fred Akshar. What upset Akshar most about the governor's speech, was the fact that the topic of heroin wasn't a part of it.

"I'm extremely disappointed that I didn't hear the governor utter one word about the heroin and opioid epidemic that's plaguing not only my district, but this entire state," Akshar said. "I would have really liked the governor to have talked about that, and to have put some money towards that issue."

Cuomo's office office responded by saying funding had already been allocated toward fighting heroin.

Akshar says he and other senate republicans are working on a comprehensive strategy to address the heroin crisis -- and that he's excited to contribute his expertise, which comes from his background in policing.
