Not Enough Evidence for Charges in Moreland Commission Closure

By Jason Weinstein.
Federal Prosecutor Preet Bharara, who has prosecuted former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, and former State Senator Tom Libous, says he does not have enough evidence to pursue criminal charges over Governor Cuomo's ending of the anti-corruption Moreland Commission.

Cuomo ended the Moreland Commission as part of the 2014 budget negotiations with the State Legislature.

In a statement Bharara said Monday, “After a thorough investigation of interference with the operation of the Moreland Commission and its premature closing, this Office has concluded that, absent any additional proof that may develop, there is insufficient evidence to prove a federal crime.

We continue to have active investigations related to substantive inquiries that were being conducted by the Moreland Commission at the time of its closure.”
