Binghamton First Friday Impresses with Annual Photography Competition

By Emily Girsch.
This month's First Friday in Binghamton was for the photographers.

The First Friday Art Walk featured 10 different venues including the Cooperative Gallery where the 5th annual Bob Johnston Memorial Photography Competition was held.

The winning photo was a close-up of the roof of the Broome County Courthouse, which was taken and digitally edited by photographer Kirk Van Zandbergen.

"I'm really excited. It's a great show," said Zandbergen.

"They do a really good job here at the gallery and the Twin Rivers Photography Club that sponsors it does a really good job with it and they get some great work. It's really nice to see all the local photographers show their best work."

This year photographer J.W. Johnston judged the submissions.

He was taken aback by the winning photograph.

"It really grew on me. The longer I was in here judging I couldn't frankly take my eyes off it," said Johnston.

"Whenever I started to look at it, I didn't want to go away from it."

The photography show at the Cooperative Gallery is on display until January 23rd.
