Some local artists were recognized for their work tonight...but these weren't just any artists..these were elementary school student artists.

Saturday night, 37 of these young artists were recognized for their creativity in the YES! Safe Choices for Kids Red Ribbon Week Poster Contest.

The students used their creativity to design posters about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.

"It's a good experience to know...you're helping other people out, how people are taking drugs, and you can know that you're not taking them," said contest winner, Grace Kane.

"We must, together, build a strong foundation for our children to live a drug free life. A life in which they're making safe choices, and I think it's evident tonight, by how many people are out here with us, parents loved ones who are out here supporting their children. It's just a remarkable event," said Fred Akshar, State Senator for the 52nd district.

Over 1,000 students from Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties enterted the contest. The winners were presented with a personalized certificate and took home a Toys "R" us gift card.
