City council democrats are up in arms over the new republican majority in the council's choice to dismiss its city clerk Joseph Merill in favor of Republican Leana P. Testani in a move they are calling, "politically motivated"

With the new Republican majority in the Binghamton City Council, minority Democrats knew that there would be changes coming. But they never expected Joseph Merrill, who has served as city clerk in 2008, 2010 and 2015. This past July, he was appointed to the position with bipartisan support, in a vote of 6 - 1. but now he won't have the job.

"It's disappointing because i was told that politics wouldn't play a role, i believe it did, but we all know when we take these positions, that's how it goes." said Joseph Merrill, Binghamton City Clerk

But City Council Republican are saying, the choice was apolitical.

"No it was not, you can look at the resume's, they were very well qualified and that was what we were looking for, some new energy. Certainly the qualifications are there, and there will be a lot of good things coming next year." said City Council Republican Chris Papastrat

Merill will turn the position over to Leana Testani on January 1st.
