Binghamton Council Looks For Homestead Tax Exception From State
At a special meeting Monday evening, the city council held a vote to approve a local law requesting Home Rule from New York state regarding the Homestead Tax as it relates to cooperative apartments at 5 Riverside Drive and 4 Oak Street.
We asked if the idea of Home Rule over a tax law could snowball into Binghamton working for home rule on several other policies out of Albany. However, it is really just one law that is at issue.
Terri Renia, Binghamton City Councilwoman says, "We're simply asking the state to allow Binghamton in our current situation, with only two co-ops present, to be able to set an exemption for that, an exception for that here in the City of Binghamton. That's all, it's just an exception to the property tax laws."
