Judge Shuts Down Fantasy Sports Sites in New York

New York Supreme Court Justice Manuel Mendez has ruled that fantasy sports sites FanDuel and DraftKings cannot operate in the state during their court battle with Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The injunction, requested by Schneiderman, was granted Friday morning.

In November, Schneiderman, ruled that the companies’ contests are a form of illegal gambling and issued cease-and-desist letters to both sites. FanDuel and DraftKings believe that their fantasy sports are skill based, which is specifically allowed under the federal law, and not games of chance.

Schneiderman issued the following statement in response to the decision,

"We are pleased with the decision, consistent with our view that DraftKings and FanDuel are operating illegal gambling operations in clear violation of New York law. I have said from the beginning that my job is to enforce the law, and that is what happened today."

The ruling is expected to be appealed.
