Johnson City Middle School Hosts Multicultural Thanksgiving

Whether they prefer mashed potatoes or turkey, students from Johnson City Middle School's English as a New Language, or ENL, program can agree on one thing; it's nice to share new traditions with friends.

Monday afternoon, 25 ENL students enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast. The annual meal began five years ago as a way to bring together students from all over the world who haven't experienced traditional Thanksgiving dinners.

"It's really fun having a meal together. It's like having a dinner with your family," said 7th Grader Diana Nguyen.

"Just watching my students interact with one another is proof that this is not just a meal. It's us coming together and not worrying about anything else except being our family at this school," said Johnson City Middle School ENL Teacher Jennifer Lobdell.

Families of those in the program come from places like the Ukraine, Vietnam and Venezuela. Some students have only been in the United States for a few months.
