Teen Intervene: Experts Talk With Adolescents About Drugs, Addiction

By Kerry Longobucco.
Drugs and addiction continue to plague our community -- including our youth. That's why some local schools are focusing on early intervention with teens.

Erin Monroe, a substance abuse prevention specialist with the Lourdes Alcohol and Drug Education Prevention Team, visited the Broome-Tioga BOCES West Learning Center on Friday to talk with students about drug abuse.

Narcan, and the connection between heroin and prescription pills, were among the topics up for discussion.

"Many of the prescription drugs out there mimic heroin. And a lot of kids say, 'I would never do heroin!' but they don't realize a lot of prescription drugs are actually very, very similar to heroin," Monroe said.

After the presentation, students had an opportunity to ask Monroe questions about what they heard.

As important as in-school drug education is -- Monroe said parents play the biggest part when it comes to prevention.
