Castle Garden residents in vestal can now rest easy knowing that they wont lose long-term power in the event of another major flood. The NYSEG substation in castle gardens, vestal provides power to over 700 families in vestal, and lost power during both the 2006 and 2011 floods. to make sure that doesn't happen again, NYSEG rigged power to bypass the substation, and restore power faster.

"People were sharing diapers with families that needed them, and food and other kinds of things. we were doing the best we could to make due until things got better, and we didn't know how long it was gonna take to get to be better." said Jim Sprague, Vice President of the Tioga Terrace Civic Association

NYSEG says that the cause of the prolonged outage in 2011 was due to the fact that crews couldn't restore power to the substation until the water level went back down.
