B-Sens squander early lead in frustrating loss

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but failed to hang on as they fell 6-3 to the visiting Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

The B-Sens notched back-to-back goals just 38 seconds apart to open the first period. Cole Schneider scored his sixth goal of the season 3:49 into the first when he deflected a shot from Fredrik Claesson. Colin Greening sped up the leftwing boards before cutting behind the Phantoms net completing a wraparound attempt 4:27 into the first to give Binghamton the two-goal advantage. The Phantoms rallied quickly, scoring a pair of goals 48 seconds apart to even the score 2-2 just over five minutes into play. Tyrell Goulbourne grabbed his fourth goal of the season with less than four minutes to play in the opening period to give Lehigh Valley the 3-2 lead heading into intermission.

Nick Cousins grabbed a share of the team-lead in goals scored with his fourth of the year 3:27 into the second off an assist from Chris Conner to make it 4-2 Phantoms. Just over 30 seconds later, Max McCormick made it a one-goal deficit for Binghamton with his second tally of the year. It appeared the teams were headed to the final intermission with Lehigh Valley holding a 4-3 lead, but with 1.5 seconds remaining in the period Kevin Goumas redirected a centering feed under the B-Sens Chris Driedger’s left pad to give the visitors the 5-3 lead.

Despite outshooting the Phantoms 11-6 over the final 20 minutes, the B-Sens failed to solve Anthony Stolarz as he stifled all of Binghamton’s scoring chances. Petr Straka added an empty-net goal with just over 1:30 to play in regulation to move the final score to 6-3.

Stolarz finished with 30 saves in the victory while Driedger fell to 4-3-0 stopping 25 of 30 shots faced.
