Vestal Supervisor Candidates Focus on Fire Station

By Jason Weinstein.
The fate of a fire station in Vestal is central to the plans of the two people running for town supervisor.

Both incumbent Democrat John Schaffer and his Republican challenger William Kelley say they would look to improve conditions at fire station number four on the Vestal Parkway.

Schaffer says he would like to demolish the structure and rebuild from the ground, up. He says legislation in Albany could help fund the project. Kelley says it's taken Schaffer too long to address the issue.

"Not all of them but a few of them, especially Station Four are in disarray and disrepair. We need to get those volunteer firemen where they can feel safe when they have to respond to a fire," said Kelley.

"It's tough pulling equipment in and out of there and the building is a bit outdated for the new apparatus. A new ladder truck won't fit in that building. The steps are steep, someone is going to get hurt," said Schaffer.

Schaffer is looking for his second term as supervisor after serving for six years on the town board. He points to the completion of the second part of the Rail Trail and flood mitigation as successes of his first term. Kelley is a small business owner and air force veteran who is also a former State Department contractor.
