Deer Causes 5 Car Collision on Rt. 81

By Lindsay Raychel.
Tuesday evening, reports came in of a traffic accident on I-81 North near exit 7 in the Town of Chenango involving two tractor trailers and three cars.

Broome County Sheriff's Office said the accident began when one car collided with a deer that ran out into the highway. That car was disabled in the middle of the road and at least two other cars were forced to stop in the highway. Following, two trailers were unable to stop in time and collided with the three cars that were stopped in the road.

Deputies said one of the tractor trailers tried to avoid the collision and swerved off the shoulder which caused the trailer to rollover onto it's side and off into an embankment.

Officials detailed that the tractor trailer which rolled over was carrying merchandise including food, household products and other equipment.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office said no injuries were reported and towing companies worked through the night to clean up the scene while Route 81 North remained open.

Crews the reported to the accident include Broome County Sheriff's Department, Chenango Fire Department, Castle Creek Fire Department, NY State Police, NY Department of Transportation and Superior Ambulance.
