By Jason Weinstein. The City of Binghamton will close the Collier Street parking garage permanently on November 9th.
Mayor Rich David said crews discovered more extensive damage to the structure than originally thought, and repairs would have run into the millions of dollars. David said continued repairs would have meant spending good money after bad.
The city has applied for $3.6 million in state funding to help make a $20 million dollar mixed-use development at 7 Hawley Street a reality. That project would include 360 parking spaces. 50 monthly commuters from Collier St. will be relocated to the Water St. garage and 200 will relocate to the State St. garage.
