SUNY Broome Hosts Forum On Heroin Epidemic

The Assembly Minority Task Force on Heroin Addiction & Community hosted its 7th annual Regional Forum at SUNY Broome tonight.

Organizers of the event say the goal was to identify problems in current efforts to combat this dark epidemic. Lawyers, social workers, insurance companies, and people with firsthand knowledge of heroin addiction were invited to speak tonight. The senior social worker at Chenango County Behavioral Health Services tells Fox 40 that insurance coverage can prevent addicts from receiving drug rehab.

Matt Skojec, senior social worker says, "Probably the most urgent thing that can be done to alter some of the shortages is to alter what's acceptable with insurance and what insurance can and cannot deny as far as coverage goes."

According to a recent report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heroin use has increased 63 percent from 2002 to 2013.
