Fiala Questions Akshar Over Car Accident

Democratic State Senate candidate Barbara Fiala is raising what she calls ethics questions about her Republican challenger Fred Akshar.

Fiala released State Police incident reports claiming Akshar and his girlfriend removed her nephew from the scene of a one-car accident in July of 2009 without notifying police about the crash.

The girlfriend of the nephew was the passenger in the car. According to her deposition she is the one who had to report the crash after he purposely crashed the car.

Akshar says he was cleared of wrongdoing and feels Fiala's raising of the issue is petty.

"Closure to the incident. That's why it's being turned over to the appropriate agencies, the FBI and the Attorney General. To put a closure to it and bring it out of a cover up," said Fiala.

"What is true is that the incident was investigated by the New York State police and the Broome County District Attorney's Office. I cooperated fully with that investigation some six years ago. And I was found to have done no wrong," said Akshar.

Akshar says he is focusing on issues he says matter to the voters. Fiala says she wants to see closure on this issue.
