A memorial almost a decade in the making to honor those lost 40 years ago once again could be on track.
Binghamton City Council is expected to approve plans for a memorial at the Rockbottom dam within the next couple of months. That is the site where three firefighters drowned in 1975. In 2006 Council approved money for a memorial.
Since, family members of the three firefighters lost have worried about putting a memorial in a spot that could be dangerous for people to visit. But Binghamton Fire Chief Dan Thomas has been put in charge of an ad hoc committee to decide where to locate a memorial. City Council President Bill Berg expects council to approve that committee's recommendation over the next couple of work sessions.
