Obstacle Course for Next Generation of Police

Criminal justice students at SUNY Broome are getting a better idea of just what stands between them and a career in law enforcement.

The sheriff's office debuted an obstacle course that criminal justice majors at the school will try to complete to give them an idea of the level of fitness they'll need to earn their badge.

The nearly mile-long course featured different surfaces and physical tests to mimic police foot chases.

"If someone runs from a lawful arrest there's climbing obstacles, balance, dodging, grip strength, core strength," said Lt. Ben Harting of the Broome County Sheriff's Office.

Thursday's group that helped debut the course included a mix of criminal justice students, police recruits, and current deputies.
