Whooping Cough Discovered in Our Region

A Delaware County resident has been confirmed as having pertussis or whooping cough.

We spoke with Broome County health official on ways to prevent this scary illness.

We learned that one of the best ways to fight the disease is by getting vaccinated.

Officials say that this is especially important if you are going to be around young children or infants.

Also, it is important to do what they say is cocooning or making sure that anyone who would be in contact with a baby has the whooping cough vaccine.

Marianne Yourdon Communicable Disease Nurse said, "People have a bad case of pertussis that they cough in coughing fits so bad that they lose their breath and sometimes even vomit. It's an uncomfortable thing and it's very serious when you talk about infants."
