Bucci Set for Papal Mass at Madison Square Garden

By Emily Girsch.
Broome County's President of Catholic Schools Richard Bucci is headed to New York City to attend Friday's Papal Mass at Madison Square Garden. Bucci was one of 87 recipients selected by lottery by the Syracuse Diocese to receive two tickets to see the Papal Mass.

"I think there's going to be a lot of electrifying atmosphere in New York City as a whole and at Madison Square Garden in particular," said Bucci.

Pope Francis will be making multiple stops in New York City including Madison Square Garden where Bucci feels it will be a unique experience to see the Pope up close.

"I think just the whole event in particular is going to be exciting but the opportunity to be in close proximity with him, to be participating in the mass, I think it's just going to be an experience I won't forget and i think that's a real level of excitement for you know, the Catholic and non-Catholic communities," said Bucci.

Other scheduled stops for the Pope in New York City include St. Patrick's Cathedral, the National September 11th Memorial and Museum, and a meeting of world leaders at the United Nations. After the mass at Madison Square Garden, the Pope will end the day by participating in a parade through Central Park.

Bucci said he looks forward to returning to Broome County and telling his students his experience.

"Well I'll be able to come back, especially in their theology classes to kind of give them, you know, a bird's eye view of what happened."
